Being a stay at home mom for the past 5 months have been awesome…It was great spending time with my new little bundle of joy. But in the back of my mind, I always knew this time is special because it wouldn’t last forever. Although I love my job it will be a bittersweet return. The time has come for me to squeeze into my gun belt, (Don’t judge me…I’m working on my mommy belly).
To get ready for my return, I will be taking the next couple of weeks to set forth my plan to get back into work mode. Both physically and mentally I need to be prepared; not only for my work responsibilities but with my overall goal to have the household run smoothly, despite the fact that I’m working full time.
If your returning to work from Maternity Leave or returning to work after an injury, try to incorporate these easy steps to get yourself organized and energized.
Get Active: A body in rest stays in rest… so get busy! Working out is a great way to increase your energy level. Energy is needed to get through a full workday and needs to extend through to your second job as Wife and Mom at home. Getting active can be as small as a 30 minute Cardio workout in your living room or signing up for a local spin class. Any activity that isn’t apart of your every-day norm. The goal is to physically get your body used to the everyday hustle and bustle of working again.
Get the Tea: Did things change while you were away? I’m not suggesting to find out the latest gossip, but make yourself aware of any new changes. Find out from close co-workers the current work environment. Are there any new supervisors and what are there expectations. Being prepared by gathering as much information as possible can help alleviate any anxiety about your return.
Dress Rehearsal: Does everything still fit the same after that 8lb bundle of joy? Don’t wait until your work week to realize you need a new wardrobe. Do a run through and maybe do a little back-to-work shopping. Whether you the hit the gym hard and your clothes are too big or your working on the last stubborn 5lbs and shirts are still a little snug. Just make sure you are comfortable returning to work.
Mentally Prepare: You are no longer the stay at home mom. You have to create a new routine of how the house will run. The groceries, laundry and the children’s doctors appointment are still on the to-do list, but how will it get done if you have to work. What’s the layout of your day once you start back to work? Delegating duties is a must, you can’t do it all. Asking hubby or bringing in help(Nanny), can be a solution to get the house to run smoothly. If you take the time to figure out the plan in advance it may save you a headache in the long run. Mentally do a run through so you can better prepare for mishaps.
It Takes a Village: We have all heard this saying before and as working moms maybe you have already incorporated this saying into our lives. Since you have mentally created your daily run through, now let’s build a support team. Who is on your emergency list to pick up the kids from school if you have to work late. Create a team that not only includes family but also friends and neighbors responsible and trusting neighbors. Printout a Calendar of your work days so they are aware of when they may be needed. Make sure they are aware of the weekends and Holidays that their services may be needed in advance. Keeping everyone on the same page will only make it easier when you need them in a pinch.
